Replicas of the Seven Wonders of the World
Are you an Instagram-obsessed traveler longing to take pictures with the world’s seven wonders? Now’s your chance – Eco Park in Kolkata has everything you need.
New Town Recreation Park has united seven world wonders under one roof – the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza, Machu Picchu, Petra Christ Redeemer, and the Colosseum are just a few examples.
Eminent artist Rupchand Kundu designed these replicas. He used high-quality fiberglass and marble to give them the appearance of the actual Taj Mahal in Agra. Each structure measures one-eighth the size of its counterpart in Agra and features a water body to allow visitors to take photographs of its reflection, just as people do at its original site in Agra.
Attraction’s entrance sphinx is also an attraction of note. Kundu said he tried to recreate an Egyptian sphinx’s exact shape and proportions; however, he had to compromise on its height and proportions due to limited space. Furthermore, he used white granite instead of natural marble because this would have cost more and been difficult to maintain over time.
Apart from these amenities, the recreation park boasts 32 moai statues along its eastern perimeter facing inward, just like those seen on Easter Island. Each is 15-19 feet tall and will soon open its doors to visitors once their decorations for Durga Puja have been completed.
Floating Amphitheatre
Kolkata Municipal Corporation, to attract tourists, is creating an Eco Park section featuring miniature versions of the seven wonders of the world conceived by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. According to Debashis Sen, Chairman and Managing Director of West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (Hidco), monuments should be completed by the summer of 2016. “Bengalis love traveling; this will allow them to experience world wonders without leaving home,” Sen said. The mini versions of the Taj Mahal, Great Pyramid of Giza, and Christ Redeemer Colosseum Petra Moai statues will all be built within a three-acre radius.
Visitors to the park can explore replicas of the seven wonders for an affordable fee, and each ticket covers two visitors over three years old; these tickets can be purchased at the entrance.
The park boasts an array of recreational and entertainment activities for residents to enjoy, with its paved promenade lined with coconut trees providing an ideal atmosphere for walking or taking an e-scooter ride along its length. Furthermore, there are multiple food kiosks inside.
From Sealdah railway station, visitors can reach Sealdah Park by bus, taxi, or three-wheeler. Alternatively, take an auto-rickshaw. Open Tuesday to Saturday with entrance free for children aged three years or younger and ticket price of Rs 30 for adults; combo tickets offering boat rides and entry into replicas of 7 wonders are also available; the park opens at 10:30 am and closes by 8:30 pm.
Flower Lake
Flower Lake at Eco Park is one of the major draws here, providing an idyllic place for people to spend quality time with their families and friends or hold events there. Beautiful plants and sculptures surround it and offer nature lovers a calm place. In addition, this park hosts Japanese restaurant services and gardens for added relaxation.
Boating, cycling, and zorbing activities can all be found here for visitors of the Eco Park. Visitors may also spot numerous species of birds inhabiting this popular tourist spot, for which admission tickets can be purchased at a modest fee. It also hosts Christ the Redeemer from James Bond movie sequence fame; visitors can see him here, too.
One of the major attractions at the park is its Butterfly Garden, covering over an acre. Featuring various plants designed to attract butterflies and glass walls that allow visitors to observe these delicate insects up close and personal, visitors can keep them in their natural habitat. Furthermore, there is a bamboo grove where visitors can witness various types of bamboo growing, from grass-sized stalks to giant shoots – two critical attractions at any park!
Along the park’s southern side lies a Graffiti Wall featuring works by local artists Subha Prasanna and Jogen Chowdhury that showcase West Bengal’s cultural heritage. There is also a Children’s Park designed especially for kids to bring joy.
